The Basic Knowledge About Doypack Stand up Pouch

Yet many of us are still unaware of the features of the Doypack bag. Here, we have answered some questions consumers are concerned about the stand-up pouches

You must be curious why stand-up pouches are also called doypack. let me tell you some of the brief history of Doypack Pouch.

In 1963, the doy pouch was designed by  THIMONNIER, and trademarked internationally under the name “Doypack”. It brought the advantages of DOYPACK flexible bag technology to the market. Now, Just like Coca-Cola and Pepsi are used to describe carbonated drinks, Doypack came to be known as a stand-up pouch brand.

In the beginning, doypack was used in the flexible pouch packaging for juices. With the improvement of packaging machines and polyethylene material technology, today, the doypack pouch is the first flexible pouch packaging solution in food packaging industry.

Flexible pouches are generally made of thermoplastic polymers. To be effective in packaging, the materials used to manufacture stand-up pouches need to meet their high barrier requirements, wear and heat resistance, and not deform easily.

  • Polyethylene; Also known as PE, doypack pouches are made out of this plastic most frequently.
  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET); This is a polyester fiber that provides the desired stiffness to the bag.
  • BOPP is shorthand for Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene: It features the pouch in a matte finish.
  • OPPmatt; It protects the prints from scratches.
  • Cast polypropylene (CPP); Food grade packaging material.
  • Aluminum Foil; It has excellent barrier properties.

To answer whether stand-up pouches can be recycled, the following knowledge base is required.

  • Among the packaging materials, most paper materials and bioplastics are compostable, but the majority of plastic materials are not compostable. In non-compostable plastics can be divided into two types: degradable and non-degradable. It is worth noting that oxo-degradable plastics would quickly break into microplastics, but they wouldn’t break down at the molecular or polymer level.
  • Today, most stand-up pouches are usually in the form of composite bags. It means the pouch film consists of several layers of materials. These different layers are laminated together, making it easier for the bag to stand up. And the multiple barriers also make your products better insulated from the outside and can stay fresh for a long time.
  • The difficulty of recycling. Used bags need to be sorted for bag material before they go into recycling. They are eventually made into a variety of plastic products. However, some stand-up pouches have a complex composition. The time and cost of sorting the complex materials outweigh the value of recycling. The bags are then discarded in landfills or incinerated without entering the recycling channel.
  • Packaging materials of a single nature are easier to recycle. Flexible plastic pouches are made of thermoplastic polymers. So the used plastic bags can be reprocessed and reused in the manufacture of new plastic bags.

With the above understanding, we conclude that:

  • Those bags made of paper and bioplastics are compostable.
  • Plastic stand-up bags made of a single material are easier to recycle.
  • The more complex the composition of the bag, the more difficult it is to recycle.
